Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) announced on March 14 the setting up of three new departments at its campus. President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in her role as the visitor of JMI, has approved amendments to the existing statute 20, reads an official notification.
The approval for the departments was conveyed to Jamia Millia Islamia by the Ministry of Education (department of higher education) vide letter no. 6-11/2022-CU 2 dated March 6, 2024. The three new departments that will be established include the Department of Law under the faculty of law, the Department of Dental Sciences and the Department of Medical Sciences under the faculty of dentistry.
Officials at the university have said in a media report that no new courses will be introduced in these departments. Jamia Registrar Nazim Jafri clarified that although law, dental and medical sciences courses already exist at the university, dedicated departments for these disciplines were earlier lacking, hence the need for the new departments.
The university, meanwhile, has also launched many innovative self-financed programmes in BTech and MTech during the early part of this month. The new courses are BTech in Electrical & Computer Engineering, BTech in Electronics (VLSI design and Technology), BTech in Computer Science & Engineering (Data Sciences), and MTech in Data Sciences, among others. These self-financed programmes are offered at an annual fee of Rs 1,50,000 for B Tech and Rs 54,000 for MTech. Candidates can apply at the official website of Jamia Millia Islamia at jmicoe.in for the said courses.
